Flax has been the talk of the county more recently for the health benefits of its seeds, but did you know that the plant used to be a staple clothing crop? Have you ever wondered how flax was grown and processed to make linen? The heritage skills of processing flax into linen are disappearing in this age of machinery and the introduction of poly fabrics. Join us as we endeavor to break that trend by processing flax grown here on the National Colonial Farm using the historic tools and skills needed to take this fiber from plant to fabric. Help us break, scutch, hackle, beat, and spin our flax fibers alongside our talented Stitch ‘n Time textile volunteers! This is a hands-on experience which will require decent hand-eye coordination, as some of the tools used are heavy and/or sharp. We recommend this activity for youth (accompanied by a parent) ages 8 and up. Registration is required for all participants and we recommend a donation of $10 to help support preserving heritage skills like these for future generations!

We ask that masks be worn at all times during the activity, and social distancing will be in place to ensure a safe and fun environment for all participants and staff.
