Virtual Workshop: A Pocketful of Stories

This event is no longer on sale.

Saturday February 4

10:00 AM  –  12:00 PM

Our clothes tell a story. Of our values, beliefs, and history. Clothing has the power to even transport us back into time. Join us online on February 4 to learn practical sewing skills while exploring stories about the reuse of fabric in the 1700s. Sew-your-own 18th century style pocket in this virtual beginner’s workshop. Skills covered include basic hand-sewing stitches and patchwork techniques.

Together we will preserve these heritage skills while creating unique stories about our own history and heritage, and the connections between our history and the stories Piscataway Park holds. What story does your pocket tell?

This is a virtual program recommended for ages 8 and up. Each participant should be able to follow written and oral instructions, hold a sewing needle, and have some prior knowledge of hand-sewing. After a brief sewing review, participants will need to use backstitch, whipstitch, and running stitch to complete the project. A Stitch tutorial video, supply list, and full instructions/pattern will be sent after registration to all participants.

Participants may choose to supply their own materials or can pay an additional $10 to have a supply kit sent to them. Please include mailing address with registration.

Each mailed supply kit includes the pocket pattern, fabric, thread, needle, twill tape, and printed instructions. Participants will need to provide their own scissors/fabric cutters, ruler/tape measure, pins, any additional unique and personalized fabric, and a flat surface to work on. Access to an iron and board is recommended, but not required. Full supply list is viewable at the bottom of this page

Kit sales close on January 21st to allow for ample delivery time. Registration for program is available until February 4th, if providing own materials.
